On Friday morning, U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in what he called an “extremely productive” conversation.
Trump stated that they discussed various topics and agreed to meet in person after Canada’s upcoming election, which is set to take place on April 28.
“We agree on many things and will be meeting immediately after Canada’s upcoming election to work on elements of politics, business, and all other factors that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada,” Trump said on his social media platform, Truth Social.
In a release to the media, Carney’s office confirmed the call with Trump.
They called the talk “a very constructive conversation about the relationship between our two countries.”
According to the release, the leaders agreed to begin negotiations on a new economic and security relationship immediately following the election.
In the meantime, the pair has agreed that conversations between the Minister of International Trade and Intergovernmental Affairs, Dominic LeBlanc, and the United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, will pick up to address immediate concerns.
Carney told the President that he would be working hard to earn the right to represent Canada in those discussions.
During the call, it was also announced that the federal government plans on implementing retaliatory tariffs to protect Canadians following the announcement of additional U.S. trade actions on April 2.
This comes as Trump has announced plans to implement a 25 per cent tariff on vehicles made outside the U.S.
